My love/hate relationship with notebooks
Designers and developers seem to have an unhealthy obsession with notebooks and writing utensils. I too share in this obsession. I have at least four notebooks I actively write in, with at least —- no joke —- seven sitting on a shelf, waiting to be used. I also buy too many pens that don’t get used because they feel weird or they don’t write smoothly enough.
As much as...

Well Played...
After a fourteen-hour drive, we made it to our future home city. We’re extremely sleep-deprived. We haven’t had hardly a wink of shuteye in over 24 hours. Now, what’s ironic is when I try to lay down in my nice, cool hotel bed, I can’t. My body is being cruel.
Earlier this morning, I tweeted that Albuquerque is a beautiful city and I truly mean that. This place is...

Big (Awesome) Changes Ahead...
What are we doing?
The wife and I, after careful consideration and preparation of our hearts by the Holy Spirit, have decided to join our friends in ministry and life Rick and Erin Morrow on their journey to start a church. As of August 1st, I will no longer be employed as Creative Director at Lebanon Family Church.
Believe me when I say we are as astonished as you. We would have never dreamed...

Say a Prayer for Avapor...
Tomorrow is a huge day for me and my band Avapor and I should really be getting some sleep as I’m feeling every-so-slightly under-the-weather. But yet, here I am, up late putting music on our family iPhones for the trip up to AgapeFest. I’m sure I’ll get some shut-eye on the way up and I’ll get plenty of sleep tonight as well.
If you happen upon this post in time and...

“Nothing But the Blood” Live at Life Connection... →
I really love this arrangement of one of my favorite hymns. It has a cool, laid-back indie worship feel which I love.

There is a lie going around.
Today I had the opportunity to play a song at a funeral. Traditionally funerals are very sad for family and friends. I hardly knew the person that passed on but I am still left with a sadness inside my heart.
There is a lie being spread around our Christian circles and it needs to stop. This lie is that God “takes” his people from this life, and that he makes us sick to teach us...

If I could clone myself...
This thought just occurred to me a moment ago, “What would I do if I could clone myself and somehow still mystically enjoy the experiences of my cloned self?”
My first thought would be to let my cloned self chase his wildest dreams. He might move to Nashville and become a huge rockstar/producer type, having his own recording studio and successful music career. In reality, that...

Fixing Gmail's iPad interface weirdness for Macs
I don’t know why I care so much about this, except that it’s been fun wading through Google’s horrific code and using nth-child selectors. Wait, did I just say that was fun? What I meant to say is that it sucks, but I have a hard time admitting defeat.
So, suffice it to say, I’ve fixed one of the many bugs presented when using the Gmail iPad interface on a Mac.
One of...
How to get Gmail's iPad interface as a Mac app
Prompted by some tweets by @mheerema and @samsoffes, I just used Fluid to create a site-specific browser that uses Google’s awesome new iPad-optimized interface for Gmail. It appears LifeHacker posted something similar just as I figured this out, but I like this better than using Firefox extensions.
To do this simply:
Download Fluid
Launch Fluid and create a site-specific browser for...

On Church Words →
At Lebanon Family Church, we’re very careful to be accessible to new people when we present the gospel. We may only have a short time before we’ve lost the attention span of unbelievers, so we choose our words carefully to make sure the message is easily understandable and free from terminology that would confuse someone.

Get the Content
Here’s a quick thought. I equate having a client who insists you design with no content to asking you to play a guitar with no strings. You have the skills to play the guitar, but you don’t have an essential tool needed to do the job. How are you to be successful?
Insist on getting the content before you design so you can make those strings sing.

Transformation
I feel a transformation happening in my inner self. Lately, I’ve felt new urges to grow up and be a better provider, caretaker, and husband.
For instance, my 2009 Christmas list comprised of mostly of hand tools. There is no logic in this. I’m not an especially handy man. I don’t even work with my hands too often. However, I had been desiring the simple tools my Dad has—wrenches,...

My Wife Is Back
My wife is back and I’m extremely happy about that fact. It’s been two months of loneliness (minus weekends), fixing food just for myself, sleeping on the couch 3-4 times a week, and copious internet time. My hope is we can start fresh and get our lives back on track. Enjoying each other, watching movies, praying and studying, trips to Springfield, eating together, and walks are all...
Should I Make a Portfolio Site?
I’m pondering putting together a proper portfolio site for the work I’ve done over the past few years. Working at a church, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved with a rebranding of the church, several branding projects for various ministries, and crap-tons of graphic design for everything imaginable. All that, and some pretty sweet websites, both in-house and for other...

I'm really getting tired of this no wife stuff.
You see, my bride has been off for the last month and a half during the week 45 miles away training for her new job at the social security office. This leaves me mostly alone on the weekdays. And that sucks.
That is all.
Video Room Painting
Nick painted our video room with actual chroma key green paint, so now we have this huge wall for doing green screen stuff. Sweet! See the full gallery on posterous Posted via email from David Hemphill | Comment »

When to call it quits for the week.
I’m feeling kind of burned out for the week. Good thing it’s Friday! That means it’s time to go home, get some rest, catch some live music, and come back to work on Sunday.
Joshua Blankenship (who’s online exploits I’ve followed for a while now) just posted an excellent diagnosis for what I’m feeling right now. I suggest you go read that right now and avoid...
Tracey: Dave what kind of virus protection should we put back on to our lap top?
Me: That's out of my expertise really, but Avast is free and decent. Norton costs money, but I suppose is good as well. The best protection is good browsing habits.
Me: The biggest thing is not using Internet Explorer, not opening attachments from people you don't know, and not believing Nigerians.

New camera at the office
We got our first HD comcorder in the other day. We went with a Panasonic HPX170, and we love it. Here are some stills from our first shoot with it. See and download the full gallery on posterous Posted via email from davidhemphill’s posterous | Comment »
I’ve been feeling a little frustrated with myself this week. It seems since my vacation I’ve felt nothing but tired and unmotivated. This is not good in my field of work, SPREADING THE GOSPEL. I thought the vacation would help me to collect myself and charge up for a huge push to get things accomplished, but it’s had the reverse effect.
I’m reminded that Paul had to beat...
