In the first quarter of 2015, I ramped up the number of projects I was taking with Monarkee, my development consultancy. One of the biggest pains with running a service company is getting paid on smaller projects. Checks are a pain, credit cards require a form, and direct deposit is nice for regular clients, but only if you can get the client to do it, which is only practical for larger amounts.
I've used a number of invoicing tools over the years, but I felt like many of them had too many features. Too many things I wasn't interested in using, and to be honest, I disliked paying monthly for a service when I only invoice a client a few times a month. So I began working on my own Stripe-based system which allowed a client to pay whatever amount they wanted. I also decided when I started developing it to make it multi-tenant, in case a few of my friends wanted to use it. I grabbed the domain pushsilver.com and an SSL certificate and quietly launched it. I've been using it since then and it's been working wonderfully.
I kept hacking at it at night, eventually building in proper invoicing, doing a redesign, and kept developing the features I needed out of an invoicing solution. The goal was to make sure it is simple and usable for freelancers. I also used this as an opportunity to build my CSS framework Beard, learn Vue.js, and flex some development muscle.
Fast-forward a few months and I think I have a really nice, easy-to-use piece of software. A few friends have been using it and I've been fixing any bugs they find. Now, I think it's time to let the rest of the world in on the goodness.
World: meet PushSilver...ultra-simple invoicing for busy humans. You can create invoices that your clients can pay online, and the money goes right into your Stripe account. We don't take a cent. If you create 3 or less invoices a month, you can use PushSilver for free. If you do more than that, we offer a "Freelancer" plan for just $10 per month and that gets you unlimited invoices.
Some things I'll be building out over the coming year:
- Adding Team members to your company, so more people can use the account
- An "Agency" plan, which will give you multiple teams. Use PushSilver for multiple companies.
- Option to customize the design and remove PushSilver branding from invoices.
- Recurring invoices. Good for billing maintenance contracts.
- Sending "Thank you" emails to clients that pay on time.
- Pay out referral payments for your friends that send you work.
- Allowing customization of the emails that are sent.
- A few other things I need to stew on more.
PushSilver has been a fun project to work on and I need it myself, so it's here to stay. If it's not for you, don't worry about it! There are a ton of great alternatives in this space. But if you need a no-nonsense way to build invoices and bill your clients, take a look at PushSilver. We'd love to have you.
